Join our exceptional Culinary Team in Boston, MA

As a Banquet/ Catering Chef at Merck in Boston, MA, you will oversee and actively participate in all aspects of food preparation, catering, quality assurance, inventory management, and team supervision. This position offers a dynamic opportunity to contribute to both day-to-day catering operations and larger, more elaborate events. You will play a key role in ensuring food quality, safety, and service excellence while working with a small, dedicated catering team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and recommendation of menu offerings, with an emphasis on day-to-day breakfast and lunch meetings, as well as larger afternoon and evening events.
  • Implement and recommend improvements in procedures and food production to enhance efficiency and overall quality.
  • Ensure compliance with all sanitation, Serve-Safe, and safety standards in the kitchen.
  • Oversee food production for daily catering needs, including breakfast and lunch meetings at the main site, along with off-site meeting drops.
  • Manage larger evening and afternoon events, coordinating with external vendors as needed (up to 220 people).
  • Supervise and mentor a small, focused team of 2 kitchen staff members and collaborate with front-of-house staff to ensure seamless service during all events.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills while managing the daily food production, ordering, and inventory management processes.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, offering excellent customer service and maintaining a high level of communication with clients and event planners.
  • Maintain a high level of quality control in all aspects of food preparation, presentation, and service.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support overall catering operations.

Qualifications:

  • Culinary Degree Required; Associate degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years of relevant culinary experience, particularly in catering and food production, including high-volume events
  • Demonstrated experience in managing day-to-day catering operations, including breakfast and lunch meetings and larger events.
  • Ability to effectively manage and lead a small team, ensuring smooth operation and high-quality service.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate well with clients, event coordinators, and team members.
  • Expertise in menu planning, food cost controls, purchasing, and inventory management, with an emphasis on local sourcing and sustainable practices.
  • Flexibility to work Monday through Friday with occasional late afternoons or evenings for larger events, and minimal weekend work.
  • Proven track record in managing high-volume food production, including catering for large events and off-site drops.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask and manage multiple catering events simultaneously.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Hands-on culinary management experience.
  • Experience in large-scale corporate or event catering.
  • Ability to manage multiple, diverse catering needs across various locations.
  • Experience with external vendor coordination of events.
