Performs basic patient care. Observes and reports abnormal occurrences or changes in patient condition. Cleans, stocks and maintains supplies for the patient unit. Performs approved NA II duties. Assists in the admission of patients to the unit to include orientation to the unit, hospital routine and patient care equipment. Responds to needs of patients with direct assistance when able or by reporting patient need to the appropriate person. Assists with implementation of nursing plan of care by carrying out delegated patient care tasks. Assists in maintaining patient safety to include the proper use of equipment and supplies. Access to medication/supply room to retrieve patient care items for patient care use as applicable per unit. Maintains a well-stocked, clean patient environment. Actively participates in cost containment and assists in accurate charging for patient services. Participates in educational and Performance Improvement activities. Actively demonstrates responsibility concerning customer satisfaction, patient throughput and hospital functional capacity. The Nurse Intern may perform additional NA II clinical skills approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing after continuing education and/or competency validation. Other duties as assigned. Minimum qualifications include high school graduate or equivalent, successful completion of the first semester in an accredited school of nursing, current registration with the NC Board of Nursing as an NA II, and verification by recommendation from one’s school of nursing. No work experience required. Skills include competency in basic nursing practice, excellent guest relations, verbal and written skills, ability to read English, accept supervision, flexibility, ability to grasp new skills, basic knowledge of age-specific considerations, and basic computer skills. Physical requirements include ability to work variable shifts, turn and lift patients, much standing, walking, bending and lifting, and visual and auditory acuity for observing patients. Position involves exposure to blood and body secretions and may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
