ABOUT OUR COMPANY
Civic Media has built a state-wide radio and digital media network in Wisconsin. We believe radio plays a crucial role in the practice of democracy in our local communities, so we aim to bring programming that advances the understanding and engagement of its principles to our audience.

POSITION SUMMARY
We’re looking for a smart, enterprising local news reporter to cover the Wausau area. This reporter will produce stories for broadcast and digital platforms across a wide range of beats and subject matters, covering anything from city council meetings to the local cranberry festival. .
This reporter will be expected to produce several short newscasts per day, which will air locally on WXCO, and to follow up that reporting with digital posting. The reporter will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other colleagues across Wisconsin to contribute to statewide coverage operations.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Deliver regional newscasts that reflect a range of subject matter, audience interests and geographic diversity,
Respond to breaking news and important events so as to serve the needs of our audiences with the latest information,
Coordinate with news colleagues in other parts of the state to share stories and collaborate,
Maintain knowledge of current issues in Wausau area and across the state,
Maintain relationships with sources and newsmakers,
Post stories of substantial time investment to the Civic Media / WXCO websites. This should also include relevant multimedia like photos and video when appropriate,
Post content on approved social media platforms and in alignment with social media strategies. Use social media platforms to find story ideas and develop audiences as part of ongoing audience engagement and growth strategies,
Appear on local, regional or statewide news/talk programming to talk about stories, issues, events and newsmakers as directed,
Contribute to newsletter and promotional material as time allows,
Maintain the standards of journalistic ethics and excellence described in Ethical Guidelines for Editorial Staff: -ethics-and-standards
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience as a print, digital, or radio journalist
Strong news judgment—including objectivity, courage, curiosity and tenacity
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Commitment to democratic principles
Strong time management skills, with demonstrated ability to meet hard deadlines
Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively given competing priorities
Technical experience in audio, or willingness to learn
Technical experience in content management systems, or willingness to learn
Access to reliable transportation
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WHO HAVE:
Completed a degree in journalism, communications, or related field
Demonstrated experience in radio or audio editing
A commitment to quality independent journalism
Prior experience in social media and audience engagement
Familiarity with Wausau and Central Wisconsin
Proficiency in Hmong language
A sense of humor and collaborative spirit
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires availability for some work outside of regular business hours, such as to attend city government meetings or cover breaking news stories.
Work may be completed remotely, but some presence at the WXCO studios is expected.
Applicants are expected to live in the Wausau region (or have a willingness to relocate).
