The Social Media Coordinator contributes to OkayAfrica's mission by engaging audiences across our digital and social platforms. We are seeking someone proactive, highly knowledgeable in African and diaspora culture, and fluent in the ever-evolving language of social media. This role is pivotal in driving OkayAfrica's growth across platforms, aiming to scale our following to over 1 million on each of our platforms and maximize engagement across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and more.

The Social Media Coordinator is responsible for creating content, scheduling posts, editing social-first video, and monitoring metrics. They will champion OkayAfrica's voice and community, with a focus on evenings and weekends.

  • Execute OkayAfricas social media strategy to drive brand awareness, follower growth, and engagement.
  • Create and curate culturally relevant content for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, X/Twitter, and YouTube.
  • Proactively pitch ideas and take initiative to package breaking news and cultural moments in a way that resonates with OkayAfricas audience.
  • Edit and repurpose long-form content (interviews, podcasts, event footage) into short-form, social-first videos.
  • Publish content with consistency in voice, brand tone, and visual identity.
  • Monitor real-time trends, global African culture, entertainment, and music to inform content and platform strategy.
  • Support and implement influencer, event, and editorial campaigns.
  • Use insights and performance data to make recommendations and optimize content.
  • Collaborate with production (studios), sales, and editorial to align social media with cross-platform storytelling.
  • Participate in creative brainstorms for video content and OkayAfrica Studios concepts.
  • Flexibility to work during cultural events, award shows, premieres, and breaking news moments.

The Social Media Coordinator should be an in-depth expert on the OKA brand, social trends, and African culture overall. They should have the following skills, education and experience.

  • Degree in Marketing, Communications, Digital Media, Journalism or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Deep passion and cultural fluency in African and African diaspora music, fashion, lifestyle, and politics.
  • 13 years experience managing social media channels for a media, entertainment, or cultural brand.
  • Proactive mindset with ability to work independently during evenings/weekends.
  • Strong editorial and writing skills; able to write smart, engaging copy and headlines.
  • Strong video editing skills using CapCut, Adobe Premiere, Canva, or similar.
  • Experience translating editorial content into compelling social packages.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of internet culture, trending formats, meme culture, and creator best practices.
  • Comfort and experience working with influencers and high-profile talent.

Areya Media, Inc. offers the following total compensation package:

  • Salary: $23.33/hr at 30 hours/week = $2,800/month
